Saint-Gobain Seva industrializes et develops within its SEVA T.E. activity
-and under Eautonic licence- the erca²(“Electro-Réduction du CArbonate de CAlcium”)technology
which has got already numerous references in the field of water
decarbonation and
softening for public and industrial sectors. |

Principle
“Pure” water does not exist by nature because water is an outstanding solvent. It is made of mineral salts, gasses and organics in solution. Among all these elements, calcium (Ca2+), carbonate (CO3 2-) and bicarbonate (HCO3-) ions create the “calco-carbonic balance”. This balance can be broken at every moment by different events such as reairing which produces a degassing, a pH modification due to addition of products or as well a temperature increase. This balance breaking induces a precipitation of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3), usually named “layer of sediment”. The damages of this layer of sediment are well-known today at household as well as at industrial level : |
- Scaling of distribution network, of tanks and mechanical systems (causing choking up, efficiency loss, defective thermal exchanges).
- Marks on products, particularly in activities like surface treatment (steel or plastics), dyeing...
Industry spends several billions € per year to fight against scaling and to repair its damages. |
- Appearance of splashes in chemistry.
Etc.
Indirectly scaling favours the development of the legionella.
The environment-friendly erca² process consists in restoring the balance by carrying out a water electrolysis and by adjusting precisely the water hardness. Thanks to a low voltage current circulating in specific electrodes, the contents of calcium and carbonate ions likely to precipitate when using water are removed in same proportions. |
The electrical current induces the momentary germination and then the crystallization by sediment dehydration on cathodes. This sediment is insoluble and then falls by gravity to the bottom of the tank where it can be extracted. |
Other techniques exist to treat the scaling characteristic of water but their principle is usually chemical and consists in replacing all the calcium ions by sodium ions, consequently making water agressive and harmful. |
